The name sodalite is derived from the Latin word \u2018sodium\u2019, referring to the sodium content of the stone. The root of the word\u00a0\u2013<\/em>liet\u00a0komt van het Griekse\u00a0lithos, wat “steen” betekent. De naam betekent dus letterlijk “natriumsteen”. Sodaliet werd in 1811 voor het eerst beschreven, maar werd pas echt populair nadat in 1891 in Canada een grote hoeveelheid van hoge kwaliteit werd ontdekt. Sindsdien wordt het daar veel gewonnen, vooral in de provincie Ontario. Daarnaast komt de steen ook voor in landen zoals Brazili\u00eb, Namibi\u00eb, India en de Verenigde Staten.<\/p>\n

Sodalite ranges in colour from deep blue to violet-blue and often contains white veins or flecks of calcite.
