Zoisite was discovered in 1805 in the Saualpe, a mountainous region in Carinthia in southern Austria. Later, deposits were also discovered in Norway, Switzerland, India, Pakistan, Tanzania and the United States. The deposit in Tanzania in particular became very well known, as a blue variety was found there: tanzanite.<\/p>\n

The mineral\u2019s name refers to Sigmund Zois von Edelstein, a Slovenian nobleman and naturalist. He was the first to have a specimen examined. The German mineralogist Abraham Gottlob Werner subsequently officially named the mineral \u201czoisite\u201d in honour of Sigmund Zois.<\/p>\n
