By smudging, we mean ‘energetic cleansing’ through the burning of certain herbs. Indigenous peoples referred to this as ‘driving away evil spirits’. Nowadays, the act of driving away evil spirits is also referred to as dispelling negative energy. The smudge stick is ideal for daily use, after a busy day or as preparation for a meditation or yoga session.

A smudging ceremony with white sage is usually carried out prior to another ritual. For example, many people practise smudging before they meditate. After all, meditation works best in a pleasant and energetically pure space! At the same time, white sage aids the meditation itself: it helps you connect with your subconscious.

How to use a smudge stick

Open doors and/or windows

Place the smudge stick in a fireproof dish or shell, with a little sand if desired

Take a match or a lighter and light the herbs. Wait until you see a flame

Blow out the flame and let the herbs smoulder

If necessary, fan the smoke with a feather

Extinguish the smudge stick by burying it in sand, placing it in a fireproof dish or dousing it with water

How you carry out a smudging ritual is a personal choice.
