Benzoin has a rich, sweet, vanilla-like scent. Benzoin oil is extracted from the bark of the Styrax benzoin, a shrub-like tropical tree. By making incisions in the trunk or removing pieces of bark, the tree secretes a balm-like gum. Through a purification process using alcohol, the gum is transformed into a reddish-brown resin. Benzoin oil is obtained by extracting the resin with alcohol. Benzoin is a very thick essential oil. For this reason, we supply a separate pipette with the bottle to help dispense the oil. The pipette can be thoroughly cleaned with a little alcohol.
The burning of benzoin resin is a centuries-old practice. In various cultures, it is used for spiritual purposes. For example, in Islamic funeral rituals, sandalwood and patchouli are burned together with benzoin resin to guide the soul to heaven. The ancient Egyptians burnt it as an offering to the gods to ward off evil spirits, and in cases of unrequited love, it can be burnt in a smoke ritual together with rose and sandalwood.

Due to its thick, viscous consistency, we advise against using this oil in a diffuser or little burner. It leaves a thick residue, which isn’t good for the diffuser either. If you do use the oil in a burner, make sure you remove the residue thoroughly with a kitchen paper and, if necessary, a little alcohol.
