Carnelian blog by De Groene Linde

Carnelian

Carnelian is an orange to reddish-brown variety of chalcedony, a type of quartz. The stone has a long history of use in jewellery and amulets, and is known for its warm, grounding energy. The name probably derives from the Latin word cornice, which means “meat”, because of its warm red-orange colour. Another theory links it to cornum, the Latin name for the dogwood berry, which is a similar colour.

Carnelian through the ages

In ancient Egypt, carnelian was used as a protective stone and as a symbol of life and rebirth. The stone was often placed in tombs to guide the deceased to the afterlife. The Romans also used carnelian to make signet rings, as wax did not adhere to this crystal. In addition, the stone was incorporated into jewellery and amulets to promote courage and strength. In the Middle Ages, carnelian was worn to give speakers and leaders greater powers of persuasion.

Carnelian is found in various places. India is one of the largest and best-known sources of this beautiful crystal. Carnelian is also mined in Brazil, Uruguay, Madagascar, Germany and the United States.

The Energy of Carnelian

Carnelian is known as a powerful, grounding and revitalising stone. It is primarily associated with energy, courage, passion and creativity, and is often used to strengthen inner strength and vitality. Carnelian helps you to take action and let go of negative energies.

As Carnelian has a strong connection with the sacral chakra, the stone can help to release blockages and trauma in that area and helps to bring emotions into balance. Creativity also originates in this chakra. So if you find that your creative flow has stalled, the energy of Carnelian is perfect for you.

Carnelian is a stone that wards off negativity and cleanses your aura of influences that hold you back. Sometimes there are subconscious factors at play that prevent you from daring to make certain choices or take certain steps. You keep coming up against the “yes, but…” or feel a certain fear when you think about it. The energy of this stone helps you let go of fears and gives your self-confidence a boost.

Carnelian’s grounding effect creates a sense of safety and security. Your energy flows back to the earth, bringing greater peace of mind and allowing you to see things more clearly again.
