The stone is named after the Canadian chemist and geologist Henry How (1828–1879), who was the first to describe the mineral in 1868. He came across the mineral when workers complained about an unknown hard stone that was disrupting their work in gypsum quarries. How examined it and eventually gave it his name. Hence: Howlite, “How’s stone”.
Howlite was first discovered in Nova Scotia, Canada, in the mid-19th century. Nowadays, it is also found in places such as the United States (California), Mexico, Germany and Turkey. Most of the howlite on the gemstone market comes from North America.
General operation
