What is a macerated oil?
A macerate is a vegetable oil in which herbs, flowers or roots are left to infuse for an extended period. This allows fat-soluble compounds to gradually be absorbed into the oil. This gives the oil its own colour, scent and texture. Dried plant material is usually used to make a stable macerate, as moisture can shorten its shelf life. You should therefore store the oil in a cool, dark place, away from excessive heat. If you’d like to know exactly how a macerate compares to other base oils, read the article The difference between refined, cold-pressed and macerated.
What are macerates used for?
Macerates are excellent base oils for skincare, massage and personalised blends. You can use them on their own or mix them with other vegetable oils and essential oils. Calendula is often chosen for gentle skincare, chamomile for its soothing properties, and arnica or St John’s wort are regularly used as a base in massage oils. This makes it easy to choose a herbal oil that suits your preferences and intended use. How to choose the right macerated oil
Pay particular attention to the carrier oil, the type of plant and the desired skin feel. A light oil feels different to a richer base. Are you using the macerate for massage, daily skincare or to create your own blend? In that case, a pure, simple herbal oil is often the most helpful. Frequently asked questions
How do I make my own macerate?
Fill a clean jar with dried herbs or flowers, cover them with vegetable oil and leave to infuse for a few weeks. Then strain out the plant matter and store the oil in a tightly sealed container, preferably in a cool, dark place.
What is the difference between a macerate and an ordinary base oil?
A standard base oil is simply a carrier oil, such as almond oil or jojoba. If you’d like to compare different options, take a look at our Base oils. A macerate is the same base oil, but enriched by having plants steeped in it. This gives the oil more character and a more specific use.
Can I use infused oils as massage oils?
Yes, many macerates are actually lovely to use as massage oils or as a base for your own blends. If you’d prefer something more convenient, go for ready-made Massage oil blends.
