Would you like to buy citrus essential oil for your diffuser, a massage oil or a relaxing bath ritual? If so, it helps to know which scent suits you best. For example, why not choose lemon essential oil if you like a clean, fresh look, or go for orange essential oil if you’re looking for a softer, rounder fragrance, whilst grapefruit, lime and bergamot each have their own distinct character.
What makes citrus oil so popular?
Citrus oils are usually extracted from the peel of fruits such as lemons, oranges, mandarins, limes or grapefruit. As a result, they have an instantly recognisable scent: fresh, fruity, sometimes slightly sweet and sometimes zesty and sparkling. This makes this scent profile popular for diffusers, natural sprays and personal care routines.
Many people choose citrus-scented essential oils when they want to create a fresh atmosphere at home, a light scent in the workplace or an uplifting note in a blend. Citrus also blends well with essential oils such as lavender, peppermint, rosemary and soft woody notes. This means this fragrance category is suitable for many moments throughout the day. The difference often lies in the quality. A pure, natural oil has a richer and more vibrant scent than a synthetic citrus fragrance. You’ll quickly notice the difference, particularly when used in a diffuser or diluted in a skin oil. At De Groene Linde, we sell 100% naturally pure oils.

Can’t decide between several fragrances? This guide will help you choose more quickly.
Oil | Fragrance profile | Often goes well with |
|---|
Lemon | Bright, sleek and fresh | Mornings, the workplace and refreshing blends |
Orange or mandarin | Smooth, full-bodied and fruity | A warm, inviting scent in the home |
Grapefruit | Sparkling with a hint of bitterness | Light, airy blends and summery scents |

Lime | Spicy, green and extra fresh | Vibrant blends with a distinct citrus character |
Lemongrass and litsea are also often chosen by those who love citrusy freshness, although they have a spicier and greener character than classic citrus oils extracted from the peel.

How to use citrus-scented essential oil
In a diffuser or on a fragrance stone
Citrus oils are ideal if you want to give a room a fresh, light scent. Use them in electric diffusers or on a fragrance stone. Always start with a small amount and follow the instructions on the product or your diffuser. Not sure about the correct dosage? Read How many drops should I put in the diffuser?. As citrus scents tend to fade a little more quickly, they are also ideal for combining with, for example, lavender, peppermint or eucalyptus.
In a massage oil or bath ritual
If you wish to apply a citrus essential oil to your skin, always mix it with a suitable carrier oil. This ensures you use the fragrance in a pleasant and responsible way. The same applies when using it in the bath: never add essential oil directly to water; always mix it first with a bath oil or another suitable dispersant.
Using citrus essential oil safely
Essential oils are highly concentrated. You should therefore use them sparingly, always read the label and never apply a citrus oil undiluted to the skin, unless the product is specifically intended for that purpose. Avoid contact with the eyes and mucous membranes, and keep the bottle out of the reach of children.
With some citrus oils, particularly cold-pressed varieties such as lemon, lime, grapefruit and bergamot, it is important to take care when exposed to sunlight. After applying the oil to your skin, it is best not to go out into the sun or use a sunbed straight away. You should also store the oil in a cool, dry place and keep it tightly sealed to ensure that its scent and quality are preserved as well as possible.
Are you pregnant, breastfeeding or planning to use essential oils on a child? If so, choose carefully, use sparingly and always follow the product-specific instructions. If in doubt, seek advice from an expert.
