An essential oil is a wonderful product, but you do need to know how to use it safely. For example, there are plenty of ways to make the most of the oil’s healing properties, but there are also a number of things you simply shouldn’t do.
An essential oil is a highly concentrated product extracted from various parts of plants. You can read all about the distillation process in our blog ‘Essential oil in the making’. As essential oils contain no additives, they are incredibly potent. You need to be aware of this so that you can use the oil safely. There are therefore a number of things we advise against.
⇝ 𝙽𝚎𝚎𝚖 𝚎𝚝𝚑𝚎𝚛𝚒𝚜𝚌𝚑𝚎 𝚘𝚕𝚒𝚎 𝚗𝚘𝚘𝚒𝚝 𝚒𝚗! – We really advise against this, even though some companies do recommend it. The high concentration can actually damage the oesophagus. And it’s not necessary either! ⇝ 𝙶𝚎𝚋𝚛𝚞𝚒𝚔 𝚍𝚎 𝚎𝚝𝚑𝚎𝚛𝚒𝚜𝚌𝚑𝚎 𝚘𝚕𝚒𝚎 𝚗𝚘𝚘𝚒𝚝 𝚙𝚞𝚞𝚛 𝚘𝚙 𝚍𝚎 𝚑𝚞𝚒𝚍 – Due to the oil’s high concentration, your skin may react strongly if you apply it undiluted. This can really irritate your skin and leave you with unsightly marks. It’s also important to bear this in mind when preparing a lovely bath with essential oil. If your skin does come into contact with a pure oil, rinse the area thoroughly with soap and water straight away, then apply a carrier oil to the area to dilute any remaining oil.’.

⇝ 𝚆𝚎𝚎𝚜 𝚟𝚘𝚘𝚛𝚣𝚒𝚌𝚑𝚝𝚒𝚐 𝚋𝚒𝚓 𝚔𝚒𝚗𝚍𝚎𝚛𝚎𝚗 𝚘𝚗𝚍𝚎𝚛 𝚍𝚎 𝟾 𝚓𝚊𝚊𝚛, 𝚔𝚠𝚎𝚝𝚜𝚋𝚊𝚛𝚎 𝚘𝚞𝚍𝚎𝚛𝚎𝚗 𝚎𝚗 𝚣𝚠𝚊𝚗𝚐𝚎𝚛𝚎𝚗 – It is strongly advised not to use oil on very young babies. As children get older, however, there are certain oils you can use. We have a special baby and children's range which you can use with complete confidence. Pregnant women should also exercise caution when using essential oils. It is safest to avoid using oils, particularly during the first three months. If you’d still like to start using essential oils after the first three months, you can use the special New Mum deploy products.
Vulnerable older people also need special care and, therefore, special products. Fortunately, we have a lovely range of fragrances designed with contraindications and the olfactory experience in mind.
⇝ 𝚆𝚎𝚎𝚜 𝚓𝚎 𝚋𝚎𝚠𝚞𝚜𝚝 𝚟𝚊𝚗 𝚌𝚘𝚗𝚝𝚛𝚊-𝚒𝚗𝚍𝚒𝚌𝚊𝚝𝚒𝚎𝚜 – It is particularly important to discuss the use of essential oils with your treating doctor if you have epilepsy, hormone-related cancer, lung or respiratory conditions, high blood pressure or are taking medication. Sometimes a particular oil may not be compatible with these conditions, which could actually make the condition worse. ⇝ 𝙱𝚛𝚎𝚗𝚐 𝚎𝚎𝚗 𝚘𝚕𝚒𝚎 𝚗𝚘𝚘𝚒𝚝 𝚊𝚊𝚗 𝚒𝚗 𝚍𝚎 𝚘𝚐𝚎𝚗 𝚘𝚏 𝚘𝚛𝚎𝚗 – You might be thinking, ‘No, of course not!’, but you sometimes find strange things on the internet… For instance, you can actually find advice somewhere that you should put a few drops of oil in your ears if you have an earache. Don’t do it!! And wash your hands after using essential oil. That way, the oil won’t accidentally get into your eyes if any does end up on your fingers.

⇝ 𝙵𝚘𝚝𝚘𝚝𝚘𝚡𝚒𝚌𝚒𝚝𝚎𝚒𝚝 – Avoid direct sunlight and sunbeds for 24–48 hours after applying certain oils to the skin. This applies to citrus oils such as lemon, Reggio bergamot and orange. These oils make the skin more sensitive to sunlight. This can cause skin reactions or pigmentation spots.
