Cleaning and Charging Crystals: Essential Tips

Many people have beautiful stones in their homes. They’re such a lovely addition to the home, but not just because of their beautiful colours and dazzling sparkle. You can also feel the energy emanating from the stones. It’s very important to cleanse and recharge crystals so that the energy continues to flow and you can keep drawing on this energy.

A gemstone is made up of various minerals. If it consists of just one mineral, we call it a crystal; if it contains several minerals, the stone is referred to as a rock. To make the text a bit easier to read, we’ll be referring to crystals throughout 😉.

Why do I need to cleanse and recharge my crystals?

If you carry a crystal with you every day, you may, over time, feel that your stone no longer radiates the same energy as it did at the start. When a crystal is formed, it can sometimes spend millions of years absorbing energy from Mother Earth. You can feel this positive energy when you hold your crystal in your hands for the first time. Once the crystal is taken into use by us humans, it is therefore important that you treat your crystal with great love and care. This is because a crystal absorbs negative energy from its surroundings. It is therefore important to cleanse your crystals after purchase. It may be that your crystal has picked up some negative energy on its journey to you. But your crystal also absorbs negative energy whilst in use. You can probably imagine that when you carry a crystal with you to protect against the negative effects of radiation, it becomes ‘saturated’ quite quickly. Cleansing and recharging crystals is therefore important to ensure that you keep the energy pure. If you do not do this, your crystal may even become dull or start to show cracks.

Cleaning the crystals

There are many different ways to clean crystals. It is, however, a good idea to know what is suitable for your particular crystal. For example, some crystals cannot tolerate moisture, so you cannot rinse them with water. On our website, the recommended cleaning methods are listed for each crystal not are good for your crystal. So you can always have a quick look here to find out the right way to clean your crystal. Fortunately, there are lots of different ways to ensure your crystal is cleaned safely. Below are the most useful ways to clean your crystal.

Running water

As mentioned earlier, there are a number of crystals that do not fare well in damp conditions. In some cases, the stone may even dissolve in water! Softer types of crystal are affected by the limescale in the water.

If your crystal can be cleansed with water, you can hold it under running water to rid it of negative energy. It’s a good idea to state your intention – either out loud or in your mind – that you are rinsing all the impurities and negative energy off your crystal with the running water. Palo Santo or Sage

To give your stones a deep energetic cleansing as well, it is a good idea to cleanse them with Palo Santo wood or Sage: a cleansing herb. Make sure the piece of sacred wood or the sage is smouldering well. Then pass the crystals through the smoke. Once again, set your intention that the stones may energetically release all negative energy.

It’s really handy to keep the sage in a Abalone shell burning. This adds an extra spiritual dimension, as you are also working with the four elements. The shell represents Water, the burning represents Fire, the sage represents Earth, and Air circulates through the shell. It’s good to perform this ritual once a month. I always cleanse my stones this way the day before the full moon. That way, all my beautiful stones get a thorough cleanse every month, and I get to enjoy a lovely ritual whilst holding all my little treasures in my hands once again. And with the smouldering sage or Palo Santo, I then walk round my house, cleansing myself and my family. That way, everything and everyone is nicely energetically cleansed again 😉.

A night underground

You can cleanse any stone by burying it in the earth overnight. Set aside a spot in the garden for this ritual so that you can easily find your stones again. Bury the stones in the earth overnight. This allows any negative energy to flow out of the stone, whereupon Mother Earth transforms it back into positive energy. Do make sure the earth is damp; if it isn’t, it’s better to clean stones that cannot withstand water in a different way. After a night’s rest in the earth, you can wipe the stones with a cloth and recharge them.

Cleaning with other stones

It is also possible to cleanse your crystal using other crystals. For example, you can use Hematite crushed stones. This iron-rich stone is self-cleansing. It’s a good idea to place the small stones in an abalone shell and leave your crystals there overnight. This method of cleansing is therefore suitable for any type of crystal. Cleaning with other stones is the safest method and suitable for any type of stone. So if you’re not sure whether your favourite stone can withstand water, this is the best way to clean it!

Charging your crystals

After cleansing your crystals, you’ll need to recharge them with positive energy. This ensures that your crystal can work to its full potential for you once again. There are various ways to recharge crystals.

Moonlight or sunlight

It really is a brilliant way to fully recharge your crystals. Place your crystal in the light of the full moon. You can do this outside, or simply on the windowsill. The moonlight gives off so much energy that your crystal can recharge whilst bathed in the light. Here’s another handy tip! Fill a large glass bottle with water and seal it. Set the water bottle down and arrange your crystals around it. Not only will your crystals recharge, but the water will also absorb the moonlight and take on the vibration of your stones. That way, you’ll have water that’s truly doubly charged! And you can actually taste the difference!

As well as moonlight, sunlight can also provide energy for your crystals. Some stones can discolour in sunlight, so do check this before you start charging your crystal with sunlight. Place the crystals you want to charge on the windowsill or outside when the sun is out. The sun’s rays will recharge your crystal nicely.

Rock crystal or selenite

You can also charge crystals using other crystals. Rock crystal and selenite are ideal for this. Rock crystal is also available in small pebbles. It’s very handy to put these little pebbles in a small dish or Abalone shell to place so that you can charge your stones in it. Selenite You can find them in lovely flat pieces, so you can leave your crystals on them overnight to recharge. There are also beautiful (though rather expensive) bowls made of rock crystal and selenite. You can place your crystals in these to recharge them.

Other things you can do with new crystals

Charging and cleansing your crystals immediately after purchase ensures that you infuse them with your energy and intention. You can then start using them straight away. Sit quietly with the crystals in your hands. Close your eyes and try to connect with the crystals. You can visualise the crystals and then see what happens… You’ll find that you receive an answer, and the way this happens is different for everyone. Ask the crystals if they’re willing to work for you and with you on the purpose for which you’ve chosen them. Because working with crystals requires cooperation 😉.
