What exactly is energy cleansing? And what’s the difference between sage and palo santo? We’ll explain it all to you in this blog post, as well as how you can use these products. It’s actually quite important to regularly cleanse your energy field of accumulated and negative energy. And it’s not just for your energy body – the energy in a home or a practice can also do with a lovely refresh every now and then.
Energetic cleansing is the process of purifying a space, person or object of negative, heavy or disruptive energies. Everything and everyone carries energy. Just as dust can accumulate in a room, energy can also become trapped, particularly in places where there have been strong emotions, tensions or stress. Think of busy living rooms, hospitals, workplaces, or even other people’s clothes and jewellery.
Do you carry crystals with you for support? It’s a good idea to cleanse them once a month so that the stone can rid itself of the energy you give off. Every stone can be cleansed with the smoke of sage and palo santo.
An energy cleansing ensures that energy can flow freely, lightly and freshly once more. It literally feels lighter, both in your surroundings and within yourself.
When we talk about energy cleansing, we also mean cleansing the energy field that surrounds your body – your aura. This energy field can become ‘contaminated’ by the energy of others or even by entities. Particularly if you are sensitive and tend to absorb energy from those around you, this can lead to tiredness, exhaustion and a feeling of heaviness. You may notice that your energy levels are low, your head feels foggy and you have little motivation.
In that case, it is possible that negative energy or energy that is not your own has ‘stuck’ to you and is, as it were, draining you. This often happens when your aura is a little weaker or more open, for example when you work a lot with people or have become unbalanced due to emotional situations. Your aura then sits further away from you, like a kind of haze, rather than being firmly wrapped around you. This makes you more susceptible to external influences.
Energetic cleansing helps you reconnect with yourself, reclaim your energy and shield yourself from what isn’t yours. That’s why we recommend doing this every day – for example, when you come home after a long day. For a space such as your home, you can do this weekly or monthly. Do you run a practice? If so, you can also clear away the energy that everyone has left behind by cleansing the space every day.
When cleaning rooms, people often Palo Santo or Salie burnt. It’s lovely to give your home a quick clean every now and then by smudging.
Sage and Palo Santo differ in origin, scent, use and spiritual significance. It is worth bearing this in mind so that you can make the right choice between the two.

Sage is traditionally used primarily by indigenous peoples in North America, particularly by the Lakota, Cheyenne and other tribes. Sage is regarded as a powerful cleanser and is said to dispel negative energies and purify a space. The scent is earthy, herbal and very intense. Not everyone finds it pleasant, and the smoke can also be perceived as overpowering. Burning sage symbolises purification, protection and the release of negativity.
Sage is usually tied into a bundle, a smudge stick, and then lit. When you blow out the large flame, the sage stick begins to smoulder, producing purifying smoke. You can walk around the room with this smoke, or, for example, walk around a person, to disperse the smoke.
You can also let loose sage smoulder in a Abalone shell. Light the various sage leaves and blow out the flames. You can use a feather to disperse the smoke throughout the room. By using these tools, you are also harnessing the power of the four elements.
Sage represents the element of Earth: the herb grows from the earth and symbolises stability, nourishment and connection.
Burning sage represents the element of Fire. This symbolises transformation: the fire transforms the herb into smoke, purification and intention.
The element of Air is represented by smoke and the use of the feather. The smoke spreads through the air and is directed by the feather.
The shell represents the element of Water. The shell comes from the sea and symbolises emotions, intuition and feminine energy.

Palo Santo originates from South America, from the Bursera graveolens-tree, and is mainly used in shamanic traditions in countries such as Peru and Ecuador. The wooden stick is lit, after which the flame is blown out so that it smoulders. The smoke is used for purification, but also for meditation and relaxation.
The effects of Palo Santo are slightly milder than those of Salie. It is said to transform negative energy into positive energy. The scent is sweet and woody, with notes of citrus and mint. Many people find it soothing and pleasant. Palo Santo symbolises happiness, healing, creativity and spiritual connection.
In shamanic traditions, Palo Santo is often used to ward off evil spirits or negative influences. Shamans also use Palo Santo for protection and to bestow blessings.
You can use Palo Santo in the same way as sage, in a shell. This way, you’re also drawing on the four elements.
Never leave smouldering sage or palo santo unattended.
Using Palo Santo and sage is wonderful, but can sometimes be a bit of a nuisance because of the smoke. That’s why we at De Groene Linde have developed a spray containing the essential oils of these two powerful plants.
This spray is a delight to use and, what’s more, very practical. You can easily use it in a treatment room – for example, between clients – without having to work with smoke. This way, you can still benefit from the energetic effects of Palo Santo and Salie, in an accessible and smoke-free manner.
