Have you ever heard of using a smudge stick? This is an ancient ritual that has its origins amongst the indigenous peoples of North America. Smudging has been practised for centuries to remove negative energy and make way for new, positive energy. Nowadays, smudging is increasingly used as a spiritual and natural aid to bring balance and tranquillity into your life.
In this blog post, I’ll explain what a smudge stick is, what its benefits are, how you can use it yourself, and I’ll give you some extra tips for lovely spiritual rituals using smudge sticks.

A smudge stick is a bundle of dried herbs or flowers that are tied together and lit to create an energetically purifying smoke. People are often familiar with the white sage smudge stick, but palo santo, lavender and rosemary are also commonly used. Each herb has its own energy and properties. Here at De Groene Linde, we use white sage, so I’ll tell you a bit more about that.
The white sage smudge stick is probably the best-known and most widely used form of smudging. White sage (Salvia apiana) has been used for centuries by Native American tribes during ceremonies and rituals, and is known for its powerful cleansing properties.
‘𝘌𝘦𝘯 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘵𝘦 𝘴𝘢𝘭𝘪𝘦 𝘴𝘮𝘶𝘥𝘨𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘬 𝘨𝘦𝘣𝘳𝘶𝘪𝘬𝘦𝘯 𝘪𝘴 𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘱𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘵𝘪𝘨 𝘳𝘪𝘵𝘶𝘦𝘦𝘭 𝘰𝘮 𝘮𝘦𝘦𝘳 𝘣𝘢𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘴, 𝘣𝘦𝘴𝘤𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘦𝘯 𝘩𝘦𝘭𝘥𝘦𝘳𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘥 𝘪𝘯 𝘫𝘦 𝘭𝘦𝘷𝘦𝘯 𝘵𝘦 𝘣𝘳𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘯. 𝘏𝘦𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘬𝘭𝘦𝘪𝘯 𝘮𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘷𝘢𝘯 𝘢𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘤𝘩𝘵, 𝘮𝘢𝘢𝘳 𝘮𝘦𝘵 𝘦𝘦𝘯 𝘨𝘳𝘰𝘰𝘵 𝘦𝘧𝘧𝘦𝘤𝘵 𝘰𝘱 𝘫𝘦 𝘦𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘨𝘪𝘦 𝘦𝘯 𝘫𝘦 𝘨𝘦𝘷𝘰𝘦𝘭 𝘷𝘢𝘯 𝘸𝘦𝘭𝘻𝘪𝘫𝘯.’
By using a smudge stick, you can remove heavy, stagnant energy from a room or aura, or transform it into a lighter vibration. After use, the space immediately feels lighter and fresher. You can use it for rooms and your aura, but also to lighten the energy of old objects – such as heirlooms, as well as gemstones and crystals.
As well as dispelling negative energy, white sage can also help you strengthen your own energy field. This makes you less susceptible to external influences. It also helps you clear your mind, feel more at peace and let go of tension.
During a ritual to purify your energy using a white sage smudge stick, emotions may surface, allowing you to process and let go of old emotions and patterns that no longer serve you. During meditation, the scent and smoke of the herbs have a grounding effect and help to deepen your meditation or yoga practice. It also helps you to live more mindfully in the here and now.
Using a smudge stick is simple and, above all, requires a calm, mindful intention. Follow these steps:

🌿 𝙕𝙚𝙩 𝙟𝙚 𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙚: Think about what you want to cleanse or let go of (for example, negative energy, stress or tension).
🌿 𝙎𝙩𝙚𝙚𝙠 𝙙𝙚 𝙨𝙢𝙪𝙙𝙜𝙚 𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙠 𝙖𝙖𝙣: Use a candle or a match. Blow gently until the herbs smoulder and give off smoke.
🌿 𝙇𝙖𝙖𝙩 𝙙𝙚 𝙧𝙤𝙤𝙠 𝙯𝙞𝙟𝙣 𝙬𝙚𝙧𝙠 𝙙𝙤𝙚𝙣: Move the wand slowly through the room, past your own body or around objects you wish to clean. If necessary, use a abalone shell to catch the ash.
🌿 𝙁𝙤𝙘𝙪𝙨 𝙤𝙥 𝙟𝙚 𝙜𝙚𝙫𝙤𝙚𝙡: Visualise how the smoke carries away everything you no longer need, and allow space to be created for light, love and peace.
🌿 𝘿𝙤𝙤𝙛 𝙙𝙚 𝙨𝙢𝙪𝙙𝙜𝙚 𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙠: Gently press the smouldering herbs into sand or soil, or wrap them tightly in aluminium foil to prevent any air from getting in.
Would you like to have a deeper spiritual experience with smudging? Below you’ll find some practical tips to help you make your ritual more powerful and meaningful.
Use smudging during a new moon or full moon ritual to support a new beginning. It’s also lovely to incorporate your gemstones into your ritual straight away. That way, you can cleanse them with the smudge stick and let them recharge in the full moon’s light.
Say an affirmation, such as: “I let go of what no longer serves me and welcome light and love into my life.” This is how you make a ritual even more powerful. You could also write down what you want to let go of on a pretty piece of paper and burn it during your ritual, so that you can send it off with the wind and into nature.
Make it a regular ritual, for example at the start of the week or after a busy day at work. Find a cosy spot in your home where you can carry out your ritual in peace. Make the space special with lovely, uplifting bits and bobs and personal items.
To give your smudge stick an extra spiritual boost, you can always use dried herbs and flowers yourself:
Palo Santo: has a calming effect and brings positive energy.
Lavender: helps you to let go of emotions and experience greater inner peace.
Rosemary: symbolises protection and strengthens your energy field.
Rose petals: symbolise love, compassion and gentleness, and bring a gentle, heart-opening energy into the room.
