The name Carnelian is derived from the Latin word cornum, which means "quince", because of its characteristic red-orange colour, which is reminiscent of the flesh of a quince. The stone is sometimes also known as carnelian mentioned.
Carnelian has been prized for centuries and was used in ancient Egypt for jewellery and amulets. The stone is found all over the world, but the finest specimens are found in Brazil, India, Uruguay and Madagascar.
