Haematite is derived from the Greek word for ‘blood’, which refers to the colour of the mineral in its powdered form. The most common form of haematite is solid, with a metallic grey-black to black iron colour. This beautiful stone is generally found in Brazil, Michigan and the United States.
Haematite is a special mineral which is said to have been used by humans as long as 164,000 years ago! During excavations in a small area in South Africa, countless artefacts dating back hundreds of thousands of years have been found. Drawings and paintings have been discovered on rock faces where a red powdery substance was present. Extensive research and analysis confirmed that this powder was, in fact, haematite.
