Obsidian is usually black or very dark brown, but it can also be grey or green. Due to its many colour variations and differences in lustre, obsidian is often used in jewellery. Black Obsidian has a pure, glossy black colour, which appears very dark brown when strong light is shone on its thin edges.
Black Obsidian is a stone that brings insight. It stimulates your personal development through (self-)insight. It is a cleansing stone that clears away all the baggage from the past that is no longer needed. Obsidian also helps to reduce fears, blockages and trauma. Sometimes Black Obsidian can do this in a rather abrupt way, causing intense emotions to surface. Energetically, the stone works effectively to improve the flow of energy. Black Obsidian helps you become more aware of your old patterns of behaviour and thinking. Black Obsidian powerfully removes negative energies from within you and from your surroundings. It is a kind of ‘energetic vacuum cleaner’ that cleanses your energy of disharmony, negative attachments, astral clutter and your own emanations of anger, greed, fear, resentment and the like.
It is a highly grounding stone and stimulates the root chakra to connect with the Earth Star, the earth chakra located about one metre below the feet.
Black Obsidian is well suited for divination and communication with spirit beings. Black Obsidian’s affinity with the spirit world and its protective properties make this stone particularly well-suited to such activities. It also helps you to gain insight into and accept the darker aspects of your character, so that these aspects can develop and be transformed.

Snowflake Obsidian is black with light spots, formed where the glass has been made opaque around clearly visible points. When you look at a polished stone, these spots resemble snowflakes.

Apache tears are a variety of obsidian. These small stones are found in Mexico and the south-west of the United States. They take their name from a story about an Apache tribe that was pursued by the cavalry. It is said that the warriors were driven off a steep cliff, causing them to fall to their deaths. The Apache women wept dark tears of grief. These solidified into the teardrop-shaped stones found in that region.
Apache tears are used to protect you from negative energies and to ground you. Their small size makes them easy to carry with you. They feel a little gentler than the other varieties and connect easily with your emotional body. They are also ideal for cleansing and healing old wounds or emotional baggage – not only from this life, but also from a past life.
