How to use a smudge stick

• Open doors and/or windows
• Place the smudge stick in a fireproof dish or shell, with a little sand if desired
• Take a match or a lighter and light the herbs. Wait until you see a flame
• Blow out the flame and let the herbs smoulder
• If necessary, fan the smoke with a feather
• Extinguish the smudge stick by burying it in sand, placing it in a fireproof dish or dousing it with water

How you carry out a smudging ritual is a personal choice. However, there are certain steps you can follow:

• Set your intention: what do you want to clear away and what do you want to welcome?
• Move the smoke slowly around the room, along the walls, into the corners, past the doorways, and wherever energy might be trapped
• Repeat your intention whilst you’re smudging
• Work from top to bottom and from the inside out
• To cleanse objects or people, move the smoke slowly around the person or object, from top to bottom. 
• Direct the smoke towards the areas you want to focus on
• Conclude the ritual with a prayer, affirmation or expression of gratitude
