Cordierite takes its name from the French geologist Pierre Louis Antoine Cordier, who made a significant contribution to mineralogy in the 19th century. The stone is also known as iolite, derived from the Greek word iOS, which means “violet”. This name refers to its characteristic blue-violet colour. Iolite is the gem-quality form of cordierite and is often used in jewellery. Cordierite is the broader mineralogical name and occurs in several colours, whilst iolite specifically refers to the transparent, usually blue-coloured variety.
Cordierite is found in Sri Lanka, India, Brazil, Madagascar and parts of North America, amongst other places. The stone is known for its pleochroism: depending on the angle, it displays different colours, ranging from blue and violet to almost colourless. Because of this remarkable effect, it is also known as “water sapphire”.
According to ancient tales, the Vikings used cordierite as a kind of sunstone. They used it to determine the position of the sun on cloudy days, thanks to the stone’s light-refracting properties. This makes cordierite, symbolically, a stone of insight, direction and inner navigation.
