The name ‘Heliotrope’ comes from Ancient Greek and literally means ‘sun-turning’ (helios = sun, trepein = to turn), which refers to the spiritual belief that this stone could influence the sun or possess its power. The name ‘bloodstone’ refers to the distinctive red inclusions on the stone’s dark green surface.

Heliotrope is found all over the world, including in India, Brazil, Australia, China and the United States. The Indian variety is often the best known due to its deep colours and beautiful patterns.
