Lapis Lazuli is a deep blue gemstone that has been renowned for thousands of years for its remarkable spiritual and healing properties. The name ‘Lapis Lazuli’ comes from Latin and Arabic, where ‘lapis’ means ‘stone’ and ‘lazuli’ refers to the blue colour, derived from the Persian word lāžaward, which means ‘sky blue’.
Lapis Lazuli has been prized since ancient times, particularly in ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia and Persia. The finest and most famous deposits are found in Afghanistan, where the stone has been mined for over 6,000 years. Its intense ultramarine blue colour, often flecked with pyrite, makes lapis lazuli a stone of kings and visionaries.
General operation
