5-Elements range

This unique (small) range of fragrances is a useful addition for therapists who work with the Chinese Five Elements.

The five elements are linked to, amongst other things, the seasons, colours, wind directions and so much more. In this blog, we won’t go into detail about how this works according to Chinese philosophy, as there are entire courses dedicated to this and we can’t cover all this information in a single blog post 😊. It’s quite a vast and complex subject. However, we do want to tell you how you can use these scent frequencies in your practice or for yourself, and how we view their use. And, of course, we’ll supplement this with some information about the different elements.

How did the range come about?

β€˜We’ve had these elements in our range before. This actually stemmed from the yoga trips to France that I organised together with Ria Sier. She incorporated these five elements into her yoga classes and during those trips. That’s when I created this fragrance range. After those trips, the range fell by the wayside a little, but I started to feel the urge again and we began to receive enquiries about it once more. However, I felt it needed a fresh perspective. I started to delve deeper into the subject, and that’s how it came about again. I started reading up on it again and began to get a feel for how the oils work. I tuned into the theme, and the scents just feel right again.

’The blends are based on Chinese philosophy, which is why essential oils aren’t included.’ – Marianne –

The 5 elements

The elements flow into one another, just like the seasons. Each element has its own specific talents and characteristics. This is reflected in the seasons, organs, colours and character traits. By exploring this in more depth, you can discover for yourself where you might need support. Everyone is a blend of the different elements, but there is often a predominant aspect within your blend of elements.

By looking at your personality traits, physique, complexion and symptoms, a therapist can quickly identify which elements are important to you. We provide a brief overview of what each of the five different elements entails. We also give some key words to describe an excess or a deficiency of an element.

5 elements: Wood

l

π™·πš˜πšžπš – π™²πš˜πš–πš™πšŠπšœπšœπš’πšŽ

Wood symbolises birth, the beginning and spring. It represents planning and getting things off the ground. The characteristics of a Wood person are: you mean well by everyone, but you don’t always manage to achieve what you’ve set out to do. A Wood person is friendly, sociable, creative, compassionate and idealistic.

When a β€˜wood person’ is in balance, you can see that they are relaxed, compassionate and keen to work things out with you. You have a clear vision and you are flexible. You know when you need to make a decision, and it is always the right one.

When there is an imbalance, you tend to see a lot of anger, and this person can quickly lose heart when faced with setbacks. You are also easily thrown off balance by changes and have a short temper.

The characteristics of a fire sign are passionate, fiery and sparkling, but also aggressive. It is also the element of inspiration and intuition. The emotions associated with the fire element are joy and love.

When a Fire person is in balance, you can see that they are very passionate about what they do. They are wise, cheerful and happy. When out of balance, a Fire person can be arrogant and self-centred.

Fire needs the element of water to achieve balance, but the reverse is also true. You could see it this way: water extinguishes fire, and fire evaporates water. When you’re busy and constantly juggling everything, your heart becomes overheated by an excess of fire. You can then add the element of water to allow yourself a little more peace and to β€˜cool’ the heart.

The use of these blends

People often come to us with questions about an element-based oil when they are undergoing treatment with a therapist trained in Chinese medicine, or when they are therapists themselves (this wonderful Chinese system is used particularly in Shiatsu therapy). When this is the case, you know exactly what you need. However, below is a brief explanation of which element you might use and when.

A session with a therapist often reveals that there is a deficiency of a particular element in your energy system. These blends can help to address this deficiency, but they can also help to bring a surplus of a particular element into better balance. The different elements nourish one another and keep each other in balance.

The nourishing and inhibitory cycle

The five elements are always depicted in a circle, as shown in the image below. It is said that each element gives rise to the next. Every element is generated by the one before it. You can see this in the outer ring of the image. So Water creates Wood, Fire creates Earth, and so on. We call this interconnection the cycle of generation. Here, you can see which element you can use when there is a deficiency. You then nourish that deficiency with the corresponding element.

But as well as a nurturing cycle, an inhibiting cycle is also needed to provide a counterbalance and to control any excess of an element. This is illustrated by the arrows inside the circle. An arrow runs from Water to Fire to extinguish it. From Metal, an arrow points to Wood to, as it were, cut down the wood. In this way, you can temper an excess of an element somewhat.

The nourishing and inhibitory cycle

k

k

For example, if you have too much of the water element in your energy system, you tend to be a bit of a flit – highly intuitive, but sometimes a little too much so. You can temper this somewhat with the earth element, which helps you feel more grounded. If you realise that you’re daydreaming a great deal and are struggling to find your place in life, you can use the metal element to address this imbalance. You can also achieve a great deal through diet and colour. There’s a wealth of information available on this subject.

Of course, you can also support this element by starting to use it. This will bring greater harmony to your energy body.

The energy of the oil helps you to regain your balance. If you’re interested in Chinese philosophy, these frequencies will suit you perfectly.

Of course, you can use these scents for yourself if you’re drawn to Chinese philosophy and are exploring it in more depth. I’d really recommend having a browse online for some information! Based on the β€˜characteristics’ associated with each element, you can work out for yourself which element is slightly out of balance. You might also simply find the scent very pleasant and choose one of these elements for that reason.

How to use the products

Use oil in an aroma burner

k

j

The 5-Elements range is available as an aura spray, a roller and an essential oil blend. You can read about how to use these products in our special blog on the use of our products.

When should you use these products? Basically, whenever you feel the need and are working on integrating the elements into your life. The roller is handy to pop in your bag so you can use it throughout the day.

If you run your own practice where you work with the elements, it’s also lovely to use a scent of your choice in a diffuser or aroma burner during a treatment. The spray is also handy to use during the treatment.

Once again, this is really just a brief overview of the Five Elements. I’d suggest having a look online or in books to find out more. Or why not visit a Shiatsu therapist if you’re experiencing any symptoms? It really is a very interesting but complex philosophy. We hope you enjoy exploring this range!
