The third chakra is called, in Sanskrit, Manipura … This word literally means ‘shining jewel’. It refers to the inner strength and light that lies within each of us. The solar plexus is the centre of personal willpower, self-esteem and decisiveness.
The solar plexus chakra plays an important role in shaping your identity, making decisions and dealing with power. It is the seat of your inner fire, the place where you say “yes” or “no”, where you set boundaries and dare to be yourself.
The third chakra is linked to the digestive system, the stomach, liver, spleen, gallbladder and pancreas. It also affects your metabolism and energy levels.
⊕ A balanced solar plexus chakra fosters self-confidence, inner strength and healthy self-esteem. You know what you want, take responsibility for your choices and stand firmly in your power. You feel energetic and motivated, and have the courage to take action. You also exude a natural authority and personal strength without being domineering.
⊖ If the third chakra is out of balance, you may experience low self-esteem, insecurity and a fear of failure. You may find it difficult to make decisions or stand up for yourself. Your energy levels are often low and you quickly feel overwhelmed by responsibilities. Physically, symptoms may include stomach problems, heartburn, bloating, a reduced appetite or, conversely, emotional eating, as well as liver or gallbladder problems.
If your solar plexus chakra is overactive, you may find yourself dealing with a need for control, a tendency towards dominance or outbursts of anger. You try to control situations out of a fear of losing control.
Ignite your inner fire! These include exercises to strengthen your ‘core’, such as planks or abdominal exercises. But starting every morning with the Sun Salutation yoga exercise also helps to activate the third chakra.
Say or write affirmations that resonate with this chakra:
Take a moment each day to sit down, place your hands on your tummy and close your eyes. Take a deep breath and imagine a radiant sun growing inside your tummy:
“I am strong and confident.”
“I’m allowed to take up my space.”
“I trust in my inner strength.”
“I am able to make choices that are good for me.”
Repeat these sentences out loud or silently, and notice how your body reacts.
Go for a brisk walk! Light that fire and go for a good long walk. Make sure you get your heart rate up by walking at a brisk pace.
Use crystals that support the third chakra. Wear them as pendant or save a cuddle stone in your trouser pocket. Good stones for the sacral chakra are:
Citrine, Tiger's Eye, Yellow Calcite, Yellow Aventurine
Use essential oils to support your solar plexus chakra. Of course, you can choose the Solar Plexus Chakra Choose a scent. I’d advise you to start using the roller. You can apply this directly to the skin, on the third chakra. You can do this several times a day, particularly when you find yourself in situations where abuse of power is a factor. Think of authoritarian figures at work or within your family.
You can also use single oils. Examples include Lemon, Grapefruit, Ginger, Rosemary and Bergamot Reggio, invigorating and warming.
Make use of the colour yellow, the colour of the sun.
