The name comes from a Greek word meaning ‘not drunk’. The explanation for the name lies in an ancient Greek myth about the god Bacchus, who, in a fit of rage, decreed that the first person he encountered would be devoured by tigers. The unfortunate Amethyst was on her way to fulfil her duties at Diana’s shrine. When the tigers pounced, Diana transformed the girl into a clear, transparent crystal. In a fit of rage, Bacchus threw the juice from his grapes over the stone, giving it its beautiful purple colour.
The Greeks also believed that amethyst prevented drunkenness 😉
