Himalayan Cedar essential oil has a warm, deep and woody scent. A scent that can clear your mind for a moment and bring you back to the here and now. The Himalayan cedar grows high in the mountains, where it braves the wind and weather. Perhaps that is precisely why this remarkable tree is so well suited to themes such as grounding, inner strength and resilience.
But where does Himalayan cedar actually come from? What are the spiritual properties of Himalayan cedar? And how can you use this essential oil? Himalayan cedar is one of my favourite single-note oils! I’d love to tell you more about it in this blog.
The Himalayan cedar has the botanical name Cedrus deodara and belongs to the pine family. The tree grows naturally in the western Himalayas, including parts of India, Pakistan, Nepal, Afghanistan and Tibet. The Himalayan cedar grows at high altitudes and can reach enormous sizes.
The name deodara comes from the Sanskrit word devadaru. This roughly translates as ‘wood of the gods’ or ‘Tree of the Gods’. The Himalayan cedar has therefore held a special place in the culture and traditions of the region for centuries. In Hinduism, forests of deodar cedars are even regarded as special places for meditation and contemplation.
Personally, I think this scent is absolutely brilliant! It’s a gently sweet fragrance that really helps me unwind. The warm, woody scent makes you feel as though you’re enjoying a lovely walk through a peaceful forest. And it’s precisely this scent that’s perfect for those moments when you need some peace and quiet and to slow down a bit. Especially in this busy, fast-paced society, it can be lovely to take a moment to reconnect with yourself after a long, hectic day. But this scent is also a lovely aid during a moment of meditation.
Both the oil and the aromatic wood have a long history of use. For example, the wood was used for buildings and temples, amongst other things. Incense was also made from the aromatic wood. Nowadays, Himalayan cedar and other cedar oils are commonly found in perfumes and personal care products, amongst other things.
From a spiritual perspective, Himalayan Cedar is often associated with grounding, stability, tranquillity and inner strength. Sometimes it feels as though your mind just won’t stop racing. You find yourself thinking about everything that still needs doing, taking in a flood of impressions, or feeling as though your attention is being pulled in all directions. At times like that, it can be nice to pause for a moment. Himalayan Cedar essential oil can help you consciously create such a moment for yourself.
A lovely exercise
Sit down quietly in a peaceful spot. Close your eyes and take a whiff of the oil. For example, rub a drop between your hands to warm it up, then cup your hands around your nose and mouth. Take a few deep breaths in and out. Then ask yourself the following questions:

How are you feeling? What do you need? And what might you be able to let go of for a while?
Just sit quietly for a moment and let the answers come to you. Experience how you slow down and reconnect with yourself.
Himalayan Cedar is mainly used in the spiritual world to help you ground yourself. Being well-grounded has a huge number of benefits. You feel more confident, experience greater peace of mind and body, and are better able to cope. But having a solid foundation is also important for realising your plans and dreams. You are present in the moment and aware of what is going on inside you at that moment.
The scent of Himalayan cedar can be a lovely aid during a moment of tranquillity when you consciously reconnect with yourself.
The Himalayan cedar stands firmly rooted in the earth whilst simultaneously reaching high into the sky. And that is precisely where a beautiful spiritual message lies. You are here on earth and have a life to live. Combining this with spirituality ensures that you allow yourself to be guided by your intuition, remain open to the energy around you, and walk your path with surrender.
You don’t have to choose between the spiritual and everyday life. You can dream whilst keeping both feet firmly on the ground.
And it is precisely this combination that makes this fragrance so perfect for moments of meditation or when you want to reconnect with yourself. A moment just for yourself, for reflection, to remind yourself that you can grow without losing sight of your roots.
The deep, warm scent of Himalayan cedar gives me a wonderfully enveloping and comforting feeling. That’s why this essential oil is perfect for those moments when you want to take a break from all the hustle and bustle around you. But even after a long day full of conversations, new experiences or appointments, this is a fantastic scent to curl up with on the sofa and reconnect with yourself. You’ll notice your mind becoming calmer and that you can let all those impressions fade away. The scent instantly creates a calm and safe atmosphere in your home.
There are various ways to use essential oils.
Add a few drops to your diffuser and let the warm, woody scent fill the room. A lovely choice for a moment of tranquillity, meditation or at the end of the day.
The spiritual effects complement meditation beautifully. Sit down quietly, take a few deep breaths in and out, and take a moment to check in with yourself. Use the oil in a diffuser, an oil burner or, as described earlier, by rubbing it warmly between your hands and ‘cupping’ them. Take a few deep breaths in and out and let the scent carry you to the peace and space you are seeking.
You can also use Himalayan Cedar at the end of a busy day. Switch on the diffuser and take a few minutes to consciously bring the day to a close. Think about what you want to take away from the day, and ask yourself what you can let go of. In this way, you can turn an ordinary moment into a little ritual for yourself.
This is my favourite way to enjoy the scent. After a long day, a lovely warm bath with Himalayan Cedar and Spearmint. It might sound like a strange combination, but I’m absolutely in love with it. The Cedar helps me feel grounded and let go of all the energy from the day. Spearmint, on the other hand, gives you a bit of a boost and has an invigorating effect. It really is a fantastic combination! But of course, you can also combine the cedar with your own favourite scent!
Enjoy the lovely warm, sweet scent of Himalayan cedar!
Love, Rebecca
