The ammonite is a fossilised stone that is millions of years old and originated in the Earth’s ancient oceans. It is the fossilised shell of an extinct marine creature that lived during the age of the dinosaurs. The name “Ammonite” is derived from the Egyptian god Amun, who was often depicted with ram’s horns. The spiral shape of the ammonite reminded ancient civilisations of these horns, which is how the stone got its name and came to be attributed with symbolic and spiritual significance from an early stage.
General operation
From a spiritual perspective, the ammonite embodies the energy of time, movement and evolution. Its spiral shape is often seen as a symbol of the eternal cycle of life: birth, growth, death and rebirth. When you hold an ammonite in your hand, you can imagine that you are connected to a flow that is far greater than yourself, a rhythm that has been continuing for millions of years.
The effects of the ammonite are often described as both grounding and energising. It helps to release old energies, patterns and blockages that are stored deep within your system. Just as the fossil itself was once a living creature that moved constantly in a spiral, this stone invites you not to stand still, but to embrace your own inner development.
Furthermore, the ammonite is regarded as a stone that sets life energy – also known as chi or prana – in motion. The spiral is said to attract this energy, amplify it and allow it to flow gradually through the body. This can create a sense of balance between body and mind, and between the earthly and the spiritual.
On a deeper level, the ammonite can help you gain insight into your life’s journey. It reminds you that change is not an end, but a continuation in a new form. Old parts of yourself are allowed to transform, just as the creature that once lived now carries new meaning as a stone.
Anyone who opens themselves up to the energy of the ammonite may experience a sense of calm and, at the same time, a gentle urge to move forward. It is a stone that whispers: everything moves, everything changes, and you move with it.
Care
