Girasol is a colourless type of opal with a soft, dreamy appearance. The name Girasol is derived from the Spanish word “girasol”, which literally means “turning towards the sun” (to turn = turn, sol = sun). This name refers to the subtle, soft glow and the play of light that the stone displays when you move it in the light; it seems as though the stone follows the light, just like a sunflower.

Girasol is a variety of quartz, often milky white to translucent with a dreamy lustre, which sometimes resembles opal. What makes this stone special is its bluish-white, almost misty glow, also known as an “opalescent sheen”. This soft glow is caused by microscopic inclusions of water vapour or gas within the crystal.
