The name Grossular comes from the Latin Grossularia, which means ‘gooseberry’. Some varieties have a green colour reminiscent of the fruit of the gooseberry bush. Grossular belongs to the garnet family and occurs in green, yellow, brown and even colourless forms. The best-known green variety is known as Tsavorite, a rare, bright green grossular from Kenya and Tanzania. Yellow-green to honey-coloured stones are usually simply referred to as grossular.
