Polychrome Jasper, also known as “Desert Jasper” or “Royal Savannah Jasper”, is a beautiful and powerful stone with a characteristic undulating play of colours comprising shades of red, yellow, beige, brown, green, blue-grey and sometimes even pink. This variety of colours gives the stone a vibrant and earthy appearance. Hence the name “polychrome”, which literally means “many-coloured” (derived from the Greek poly = a lot, chroma = colour).

The stone was discovered relatively recently, only at the start of the 21st century during a mining expedition to Madagascar. That is also where this unique jasper mainly comes from. The colourful bands and patterns are formed by natural minerals and oxides that were deposited millions of years ago in layers of quartz and chalcedony.
