The name prehnite is derived from the Dutch colonel Hendrik von Prehn. In the 18th century, he was governor of the Cape of Good Hope (now South Africa). According to tradition, he brought the stone from South Africa to Europe. Prehniet was described as a new mineral in 1788 by the German geologist Abraham Gottlob Werner and named after Von Prehn.

Prehnite was first discovered in South Africa, in the area around the Cape Province. Today, prehnite is found in various places around the world. Well-known localities include South Africa, Australia, China, India, Canada and the United States. Mali is also known for producing beautiful prehnite with unusual inclusions.

Prehnite is commonly found in cavities and fissures within volcanic rock. It is there that the mineral can form over a long period of time.
