Sapphire is the national gemstone of Greece and is known as a spiritual and protective stone. It is a precious stone and is widely used as a decorative element in clothing and other items. Sapphire is the second-hardest stone in the world, after the diamond.

Sapphires are found all over the world, with major deposits in Sri Lanka, Myanmar (Burma), Thailand, Kashmir, Australia and Madagascar. The name "sapphire" comes from the Latin "sapphirus", which in turn derives from Greek and possibly even from Sanskrit, where it means "blue stone".
