The scallop shell has been regarded for centuries as a symbol of travel, protection, purification and spiritual development. Its connection to the sea, in particular, gives the shell a powerful energetic significance. In many spiritual traditions, water represents cleansing, letting go and starting afresh. The shell therefore symbolises leaving old energy behind and making room for something new.
The scallop shell also has a distinctive shape. The lines radiate outwards from a single central point. This is often seen as a symbol of growth, movement and following your own path in life. From the centre, you move outwards and continually discover new experiences.
The pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela is also closely associated with the scallop shell. Pilgrims carried the shell with them as a distinguishing mark and a symbol of their journey. As a result, the shell also represents inner growth, self-awareness and the path to one’s true self.
When you burn the dried sage in the scallop shell, these symbolic meanings come together beautifully. In various traditions, sage is used as part of a ritual centred on purification and the release of unwanted energy. The shell can be seen as a natural ritual dish that holds the smoke and the herbs.
From an energetic perspective, you can see the shell as a symbol of holding onto intention. Whilst the sage is burning, you can consciously state an intention – for example, that you wish to cleanse a space, yourself or a particular place, and let go of old energy. The smoke then drifts through the space, whilst the shell remains present as a symbol of protection, connection and your own life path.
A lovely spiritual thought on this subject is:
Sage helps you let go; the shell reminds you of where you come from and invites you to continue following your own path.
A handy tip: when burning sage, always use a heat-resistant surface and never leave the bowl unattended. The bowl may be damaged by the heat and become discoloured on the inside. The bowl may become hot.
Earth – sage
Sage is a plant that grows directly from the earth. It therefore represents the element of Earth: connection, stability and the power of nature. You use sage as the basis of the cleansing ritual, thereby, as it were, setting the intention to let go of what no longer suits you.
Fire – the burning of sage
When you light the sage, the element of Fire comes into play. Fire symbolises transformation, power and change. It burns the sage and transforms its solid form into smoke. From a spiritual perspective, you can see this as a metaphor for the transformation of old or heavy energy.
Air – the smoke
The smoke introduces the element of Air into the ritual. The smoke moves through the room and spreads the scent of sage. Air symbolises movement, awareness, communication and the creation of space. You can consciously guide the smoke past yourself or through a room whilst stating a clear intention.
Water – the shell
The scallop shell comes from the sea and therefore carries the symbolism of Water. Water represents flow, emotion, intuition and purification. Although the shell itself no longer contains any water, its origins remind us of our connection to the sea and the element of Water.
