The Shiva’s eye shell is the operculum, a natural 'lid', of a marine mollusc, often of the Turban (Turban) snail. This hard plate seals the opening of the shell when the animal retreats, and thus serves as protection. The name ‘Shiva’s Eye’ refers to the mythical third eye of the Hindu god Shiva, the eye that sees beyond the physical world and symbolises intuition, insight and inner knowledge.
Shiva’s Eye is found in Thailand, India, Indonesia and Australia, amongst other places, particularly in tropical coastal areas where these sea snails are found in abundance. Natural erosion causes the operculum to become detached and wash up on beaches, where it is then collected.
