Quickly browse by first letter within the single oils:
Whether you prefer fresh and light, soft and floral, or warm and earthy: with a single-note oil, you’re making a conscious choice for one distinct scent and one natural source. This makes it easy to discover which oil feels right for your daily routine.
What is a single essential oil?
A single essential oil is an oil derived from a single botanical species. No other essential oils have been added, unlike in a blend. The oil is usually extracted by steam distillation or, in the case of many citrus varieties, by cold-pressing the peel. This ensures that each oil retains its own distinctive scent. Think of lavender for a gentle, soothing evening, lemon for a fresh atmosphere, or patchouli for a warm, grounding scent experience.
Naturally pure, unadulterated and organic
With single essential oils, you should pay attention not only to the scent, but also to the composition. ‘Naturally pure’ means that the oil is of plant origin and contains no synthetic fragrances or unnecessary additives. ‘Organic’ primarily refers to the method of cultivation and processing. So it is not exactly the same thing. An oil can be naturally pure without an organic certification, and conversely, it remains important to always check the origin, quality and clear instructions for use. When sourcing our oils, we always pay close attention to their purity.
Single oil or a blend?
If you want to experience a single, distinctive scent, a single essential oil is often the best choice. You can clearly smell the character of a single plant and discover exactly what you like. A blend, on the other hand, is handy if you prefer a ready-made combination of several scents. Many people choose single oils to experiment with themselves, whilst a blend is particularly useful if you want to use a balanced scent quickly. Both have their own place within aromatherapy and natural self-care.
Which single essential oil is right for you?
The easiest way to choose is to consider the scent experience and when you’ll be using it. This guide will help you get started:
You can also explore fragrance families via our fragrance profiles, or filter by function/topic using the Topics: single oils.
Fragrance style | Examples | Often chosen for |
|---|
Fresh and clear | Lemon, orange, eucalyptus, peppermint | A light, clean atmosphere in the home |
Floral and soft | Lavender, geranium, rose | A peaceful evening ritual or a gentle scent experience |
Spicy and warming | Cinnamon, cloves, ginger | A rich, enveloping fragrance |
Earthy and deep | Patchouli, cedarwood, frankincense | Moments of tranquillity and reflection |
If you’re unsure which scent to choose, start with an oil that suits the time of day you want to use it: during the day, often something fresher; in the evening, often something softer or warmer.
How do you use a single essential oil?
A few drops in a diffuser is the most popular way to enjoy the scent. You can also mix and match to create your own blend. If you wish to apply an oil to your skin, always dilute it first in a carrier oil such as jojoba or sweet almond oil. When using essential oil in the bath, do not add it undiluted to the water; mix it with a suitable carrier oil first. Avoid contact with the eyes and mucous membranes, follow the dosage instructions on the label, and take extra care if you are pregnant, or if there are young children or pets present.
