As you can see in the blog post about the first chakra As you may have read, chakras are spinning ‘wheels’ of energy within our energy body. When these chakras are in harmony, you feel at ease with yourself, you move effortlessly with the flow of life and you stand firmly on your own two feet.
Blockages in a chakra can manifest as physical symptoms, poor sleep or a general sense of unease or imbalance. But how do you know if there is a blockage?
To help you with this, we’ve written this blog series! There’s a separate blog for each chakra, in which we explain:

The fifth chakra is called, in Sanskrit, Vishuddha … This literally means “purification”. It refers to the ability to communicate your inner truth clearly and purely, both to yourself and to the world around you.
The throat chakra is the centre of expression, communication and authenticity. It is here that you give voice to your inner world of experience. It enables you to express your thoughts, feelings and desires honestly and openly. This chakra invites you to be true to yourself and to speak your truth, without fear, judgement or pretence.
Vishuddha is associated with the throat, neck, vocal cords, thyroid gland and hearing. It also influences your ability to listen, not only to others, but also to your own inner voice.
⊕ A balanced throat chakra ensures clear and sincere communication. You have the confidence to speak your mind, but you are also able to truly listen. Your words are powerful, loving and pure. You speak from the heart and act in accordance with your deeper truth.
⊖ If this chakra is out of balance, you may find it difficult to speak or, conversely, use your voice excessively. You may feel anxious about speaking your mind or be afraid of rejection. Sometimes you hold back, swallow your words or lie to yourself. Physically, symptoms may include a sore throat, hoarseness, thyroid problems, neck pain or tension in the jaw.
If your throat chakra is overactive, you may communicate in a domineering or forceful manner. You talk a lot, interrupt others or use language that is critical and judgemental. You may also find it difficult to be quiet and listen to your intuition.
Focus your awareness on the throat area. Consider gentle yoga exercises that open up the neck and shoulders, such as the fish pose (Matsyasana) or neck rolls. Simply relaxing your shoulders, tucking your chin in slightly and keeping your throat open can also create space.
Sit down quietly, place your hands gently on your throat, or on your heart and throat at the same time, and take a deep breath. Visualise a bright blue glow around your throat area and say to yourself:
“I speak my truth.”
“My vote counts.”
“I communicate clearly and sincerely.”
“I listen carefully – to myself as well.”
Repeat these sentences mindfully and feel the space and calm developing in your throat.
Singing, humming or chanting mantras (such as the sound HAM) stimulate the throat chakra in a natural way. So sing, hum or speak your truth, even if it’s just for yourself!
Crystals that support the throat chakra include:
Aquamarine, Blue Chalcedony, Sodalite, Larimar, Lapis Lazuli
These stones help you to find your voice, express yourself clearly and experience inner peace when communicating.
Essential oils for the throat chakra include:
Peppermint, Blue Chamomile, Salie, Cedar wood and Eucalyptus
These oils open up and purify the throat area, help you speak clearly and promote relaxation in the neck and shoulders. Of course, you can also use the scent frequencies from our special Chakra range, Throat Chakra.
Use a roller to apply it to your throat or neck, or use a diffuser or aroma burner to fill your space with a supportive scent that helps you express your truth.
Use the colour blue to activate and balance the throat chakra.
Visualise a radiant light-blue sphere in your throat. Let the light pulse gently as you connect with your inner voice. See how this light spreads to your heart and your head, so that you speak from a place of both love and wisdom.
