A gentle breeze, the sound of rippling water or the rustling of leaves. Sound can have a special effect on you. It can take your mind off things and bring your attention back to the present moment. The Koshi is a wonderful example of this.
A Koshi is a small, handmade musical instrument consisting of metal rods suspended inside a bamboo cylinder. When you gently move the Koshi, it produces clear, harmonious sounds. Every Koshi has its own unique sound and atmosphere.
At De Groene Linde, you’ll find the four Koshi’s associated with the elements Fire, Water, Earth and Air. We also have four Koshi’s with the themes Mountain, Ocean, Forest and River. Every sound invites you to slow down in a different way and connect with yourself and your surroundings.
The four elements feature in many spiritual traditions. They symbolise various qualities and powers that are also present within us.
Fire symbolises strength, passion, movement and transformation. It is the energy that sets things in motion and helps you to feel your own fire.
The Koshi Fire has a warm, vibrant sound. You can use it whenever you want to experience a bit of extra energy or inspiration. For example, at the start of a meditation, during a ritual, or when you want to consciously usher in a new phase.
Let the sounds move through the room and ask yourself: Where should my inner fire be allowed to flow more freely?
Water moves with the flow, flows and always finds its own way. It symbolises emotion, intuition, gentleness and letting go.
The sounds of the Koshi Water feel light and flowing. A lovely Koshi to use when you want to slow down and make more space for your feelings.
Let the sounds come and go without having to do anything. Just like water, you don’t have to hold on to everything. Sometimes you can just go with the flow.

In what areas should I trust my instincts more? What should I let go of?
Earth symbolises stability, security, tranquillity and connection. It is the energy that helps you keep both feet firmly on the ground.
The Koshi Earth is perfect for moments when you want to ground yourself. Use it, for example, during meditation, after a busy day, or whenever you need a quiet moment to yourself.
Listen to every note and feel your attention slowly drift downwards.
What helps me to stand firm and be fully present?
Air symbolises freedom, space, inspiration and new ideas. It is all around us, but we usually only notice it when it moves.
The Koshi Lucht has a light and free-flowing sound. It’s a lovely Koshi to use when you need some space in your head or when you want to encourage yourself to think and move more freely again.
Breathe in calmly whilst listening to the sounds.
What should I make more room for?
As well as the four elements, there are four Koshi’s that take you to different places in nature: Mountain, Ocean, Forest and River.
Every sound evokes its own image and feeling. This means you can also use the Koshi as a sort of short journey into nature, right from the comfort of your own home.

The mountain symbolises strength, tranquillity and steadfastness. A mountain does not shift with every change around it. It simply stands there.
The Koshi Mountain invites you to experience that same sense of calm and stability within yourself. A lovely sound for meditation, yoga or any moment when you want to pause for a moment.
Close your eyes and imagine you’re standing on top of a mountain. The world around you falls silent. You don’t have to go anywhere.
I’m allowed to slow down. I’m allowed to stand firm.
The ocean is boundless and powerful. The waves come and go, reminding us that everything is constantly in motion.
The Koshi Ocean takes you to that vast, open space. To that sense of freedom and the boundlessness of the sea.
Use this Koshi during meditation or whenever you need some space and relaxation.
Imagine sitting on the beach and listening to the sounds, as if the waves were constantly coming towards you and then receding again.
I am letting go of what no longer belongs to me.
There’s something special about the forest. As soon as you walk amongst the trees, the atmosphere changes. It becomes quieter and your senses are awakened.
The Koshi Forest brings that natural, tranquil atmosphere into your home. The sounds can help you step away from the hustle and bustle of the day for a moment and reconnect with nature.
You don’t even need to go outside to do that. Sit down, close your eyes and let the sounds carry you away to a place amongst the trees.
I connect with the tranquillity and wisdom of nature.
A river never stops flowing. Sometimes calm and gentle, sometimes more powerful. It constantly finds its way anew.
The Koshi River is a beautiful symbol of trust, movement and going with the flow.
This Koshi is ideal for those moments when you want to let go of something, or when you want to remind yourself that you don’t have to control everything.
Listen to the sounds and imagine you’re sitting by a river. You don’t need to hold on to anything. Let everything flow on.
I trust in the flow of life.
There is no right or wrong Koshi. Every sound has its own character and can mean something different to you at different times.
Perhaps the Koshi Earth element appeals to you when you need peace and grounding. Or perhaps you feel the power of Fire when you want more inspiration and movement. Perhaps the freedom of Air appeals to you, or you feel drawn to the gentle flow of Water.
And then there are the natural worlds of Mountain, Ocean, Forest and River.

You can consciously choose a Koshi based on what you need at that moment. But you can also simply listen. You’ll often find that you instinctively sense which sound resonates with you.
You can use the Koshi at all sorts of times during the day. During meditation, after a yoga session, whilst doing breathing exercises, or simply when you want to slow down for a moment.
The Koshi can also be a lovely addition to an energy ritual. Let the sounds fill your space and give yourself a few minutes where you don’t have to do anything.
You can also use the Koshi at the beginning or end of a ritual. The sound can, as it were, mark a transition: from bustle to tranquillity, from thinking to feeling, or from one phase to the next.
Perhaps that’s the best thing about the Koshi. You don’t have to do anything. Just listen.
