Perhaps you’ve experienced that moment when someone Koshi Let the sounds ring out. During a yoga class or another relaxing moment. The first notes ring out clearly and softly, and then seem to move slowly through the room. You don’t really have to do anything. Just sit back and enjoy listening.
A Koshi is much more than just a beautiful wind chime. Its sounds can invite you to slow down, be present and consciously connect with the energy of a space or the moment. That is precisely why Koshis are widely used during meditation, yoga, rituals and other forms of consciousness work.
The four different Koshi are associated with the four elements: Earth, Water, Air and Fire. As a result, each Koshi not only has its own sound, but also its own atmosphere and symbolism.
A Koshi is a handmade gong with a bamboo resonator and eight metal tuning bars. The way in which the bars are tuned creates the Koshi’s characteristic rich and sustained sound.
There are four different versions:
Koshi Terra | Earth
Koshi Aqua | Water
Koshi Aria | Air
Koshi Ignis | Fire
Each of the four Koshi has its own scale and tonal character. Together, they beautifully reflect the four classical elements.
The elements of Earth, Water, Air and Fire feature in all manner of spiritual traditions. They can symbolise various qualities within ourselves and in nature.
You can therefore consciously choose a Koshi based on the element you wish to work with at that moment.

Earth symbolises grounding, stability, tranquillity and connection.
The sound of the Terra is warm and deep. It is a lovely Koshi to use when you want to slow down and be more present in the here and now.
For example, you can use Terra to begin or end a meditation. Let the sound move gently through the room and imagine yourself becoming more and more firmly connected to the earth.
Energetic theme: grounding, stability, tranquillity and a connection with nature.
Water symbolises flow, emotion, gentleness and letting go.
The Aqua has a soft, flowing sound that complements the fluid nature of water beautifully. Use this Koshi, for example, when you want to create a moment of stillness or when you want to consciously make space for your feelings.
Water doesn’t have to fight whatever comes its way. It simply flows around it. You can bear that in mind when working with the Aqua.
Energetic theme: flow, gentleness, sensation and letting go.
Air symbolises freedom, space, inspiration and movement.
The Aria has a light and clear sound. The sounds can invite you to experience, quite literally, a little more space – within your body, in your mind or in the space around you.
You can use the Aria during meditation, whilst practising breathing exercises, or whenever you want to transform the energy of a space.
Energetic theme: freedom, clarity, inspiration and space.
Fire symbolises strength, passion, movement and transformation.
The Ignis has a lively and bright character. Fire brings movement and can symbolise the kindling of your inner strength and enthusiasm.
For example, use the Ignis when you want to mark a new beginning, set an intention or consciously focus on change.
Energetic theme: strength, passion, transformation and renewed energy.
You don’t need any experience at all with meditation or energy work to get started with a Koshi.
Hang the Koshi in a quiet place or hold it gently. Give it a gentle shake and listen to the sounds. Don’t try to decide what you should feel. Just listen.
For example, you can use the Koshi:
The beauty of sound is that you don’t need much to create it. Just a few notes can be enough to capture someone’s attention.
Perhaps you’ll know straight away which one appeals to you. Or perhaps you’ll be drawn to the element that you’d like to focus on a bit more at this stage in your life.
For example, you could ask yourself:
Do I need to be more grounded?
Then choose Terra.
Do I want to be able to go with the flow and let go more?
In that case, Aqua is just the thing.
Do I long for space and inspiration?
Why not take a look at Aria?.
Do I want exercise, strength or a fresh start?
In that case, you could give the Ignis a go.
But of course, you don’t always have to make a conscious choice. Sometimes it’s actually nice to close your eyes, let the different Koshi’s ring out and feel which sound moves you at that moment.
Do you have all four Koshi’s? If so, you can use them together.
Earth, Water, Air and Fire are constantly interconnected. In our own lives, too, we are always seeking a certain balance between these different qualities.
Start, for example, with Terra to ground yourself. Then Aqua Listen carefully and imagine that everything that’s stuck is allowed to flow again. Then use Aria to create space, and finish with Ignis, as a symbol of strength and new energy.
The four Koshi are tuned to one another so that they can sound harmonious when played together.
You can use this to create your own little sound ritual. Not because it has to be complicated, but precisely because a few minutes of mindful listening are sometimes all it takes.
A Koshi doesn’t have to do anything for you do. Think of the sound as an invitation instead.
An invitation to pause for a moment, to listen, to feel and to be fully present.
The four elements remind us that we are part of nature. Sometimes we need the solidity of the earth, sometimes the flow of water, the freedom of air or the power of fire.
