The Blue Lotus, also known as the Blue Water Lily, is a remarkable aquatic plant with beautiful blue flowers. Its official botanical name is Nymphaea caerulea. Despite its name, the Blue Lotus is not, botanically speaking, a true lotus, but a water lily belonging to the Nymphaeaceae family.

The plant is native to parts of Africa and is best known for its special significance in ancient Egypt. The flower features frequently in Egyptian art and was associated with spirituality, rebirth and the cycle of life and death. As the fragrant compounds in these delicate flowers are not easily extracted by steam distillation, Blue Lotus is usually produced as an absolute.
