What sort of oil should you put in a diffuser?
In an aroma diffuser or electric fragrance diffuser, it is best to use pure essential oil for use in a diffuser or a natural blend that is clearly intended for this purpose. Not every oil is suitable. Massage oil, heavy carrier oil and perfume oil may be too heavy for the device or intended for a different purpose. A good diffuser oil disperses well in the water, fills the room with a pleasant scent and is a pleasure to use. Popular choices include, for example, lavender, citrus, eucalyptus or a carefully formulated blend for a specific time of day.
What should you look out for when buying diffuser oil?
If you want to choose the best oil for a diffuser, focus above all on quality and clarity. You don’t need to overcomplicate things, but there are a few points that are really important.
Choose an oil that is specifically suitable for a diffuser or aroma diffuser.
Ideally, opt for pure essential oil or a 100% natural blend without any unnecessary additives.
Check that the composition is clearly stated. With individual essential oils, the inclusion of a botanical name is a good sign of transparency.
A dark glass bottle is ideal, as essential oils are sensitive to light.
Make sure the oil isn’t greasy or sticky, so that your diffuser stays clean more easily.
Ultimately, the best essential oil for a diffuser is the one that suits your scent preferences, the room in which you’re using it and the type of diffuser you have. If you prefer pure and natural products, you’ll usually be best served by a pure essential oil or an artisanal blend.
Essential oil or fragrance oil: what’s the difference?
Many people search for ‘fragrance oil diffusers’, when what they actually mean is a natural essential oil. The main difference lies in their origin and composition. Essential oils are extracted from plant material. ‘Fragrance oil’ is a broader term and can be natural, but may also consist partly or entirely of synthetic fragrances. That’s why it’s wise to always check the label and the instructions for use.
Characteristic | Single oils | Fragrance oil |
|---|
Origin | Derived from plants | Fragrance composition, natural or synthetic |
Scent experience | Natural and layered | Often more perfume-like or consistent |
Use in a diffuser | Suitable if the product is intended for that purpose | Use only if the manufacturer specifies this |
What to look out for | Botanical name and clear composition | Ingredients and clear instructions for use |

Which diffuser oil suits your mood?
Choosing the right aroma diffuser oil starts with the atmosphere you want to create. There isn’t one single scent that’s best for everyone. It’s mainly about what you find pleasant in your space and at that particular moment.
Citrus oils often provide a light, fresh and invigorating scent.
Lavender and soft floral notes are often chosen for the evening or a peaceful bedroom.
Eucalyptus, pine and other fresh, green scents are ideal for creating a fresh, clean atmosphere in your home or practice.
Woody, spicy and warm blends are lovely for a cosy, comforting or meditative moment.
Not sure? Then start with a fragrance you’re already familiar with and like. From there, you’ll naturally discover whether you prefer fresh, soft, warm or, on the contrary, bold scents. Looking for ideas to mix things up? Be inspired by our diffuser recipes.
How do you use oil in an aroma diffuser?
Using essential oil in a diffuser is simple. With most ultrasonic diffusers, you first fill the reservoir with water up to the marked line. Then add a few drops of oil. For a small to medium-sized room, 3 to 8 drops is often a good starting point. Don’t have a diffuser at home yet? Then get started easily with our diffuser sets.
Fill the diffuser with water as per the instructions.
Add a few drops of essential oil or a blend.
Switch on the diffuser and let the scent diffuse gently.
Clean the tank regularly to ensure it smells fresh and is well maintained.
More drops isn’t always better. It’s better to start with a little less and build up gradually. That way, the scent remains pleasant and you can adjust it more easily to suit the room. Want to measure it out precisely? Read more here How many drops should I put in the diffuser?
