Geranium oil

Geranium oil

Geranium oil is an essential oil with a gentle, floral scent in which you can detect a rose-like note. The scent lends a warm, harmonious atmosphere to your self-care moments and is much loved in aromatherapy, massage and natural skincare rituals.

At De Groene Linde, you’ll find pure geranium essential oil from Pelargonium graveolens, sourced from Morocco and extracted by steam distillation. Choose the size that suits your needs: 10, 30, 50 or 100 ml. Take a look at our Mono-unsaturated oils (D–K).

Would you like an even more refined rose aroma? Then take a look at our rose geranium oil, distilled from the leaves and flowering buds of Pelargonium roseum.

The scent and properties of geranium essential oil

Geranium oil is made from the fragrant green parts of the plant, not just the flowers. The aroma is fresh, sweet and floral, with a distinct rose-like quality. This makes it a lovely oil to use when you want to create a softer, warmer and more balanced atmosphere in your home. See also Floral fragrance profiles if you like this fragrance profile.

In fragrance blends, geranium acts as a lovely, unifying heart note. The oil blends well with lavender, bergamot, orange, frankincense, ylang-ylang and rose, amongst others. This makes it easy to create a personalised fragrance that’s perfect for a moment of tranquillity, meditation or an evening ritual.

Using geranium oil

Essential oils are highly concentrated. You should therefore always use them sparingly and adjust the amount according to the room, the product and your sensitivity.

In a diffuser or on a fragrance stone

Add a few drops of geranium oil to the water reservoir of your diffuser, following the instructions for the device. For a fragrance stone, you can start with 2 to 4 drops. The rose-like scent is particularly pleasant in the living room, bedroom or practice room. Read more about How many drops should I put in the diffuser?

  • Soft and floral: geranium with lavender
  • Fresh and cheerful: geranium with sweet orange or bergamot
  • Warm and cosy: geranium with frankincense or ylang-ylang

As a massage or skin oil

Never apply geranium essential oil undiluted to the skin. For example, mix 1 to 2 drops with 10 ml of a vegetable carrier oil to make a nourishing body or massage oil. It is best to make small batches so that you are always using a fresh mixture. Not sure which carrier oil to use? Read more about Choosing a base oil for dilution.

Before using this product on your skin, it is advisable to carry out a patch test in the crook of your elbow. Stop using it if your skin becomes red, itchy or irritated.

In the bath or in the shower

Do not add essential oil directly to bath water, as oil does not dissolve in water and may come into direct contact with the skin. First, carefully mix a few drops of geranium oil, at most, into a neutral bath oil or a suitable emulsifier. If using in the shower, you may wish to place a drop on a fragrance stone so that you can enjoy the aroma without direct skin contact. Read more about Using essential oils in the bath.

Which geranium oil is right for you?

Our geranium oil from Pelargonium graveolens has an approachable, green, floral and rose-like aroma. It’s a lovely choice if you’re looking for a versatile essential oil for your diffuser, your own massage oil or fragrance blends.

Rose geranium oil from Pelargonium roseum has a more pronounced and refined rose note. This variant is popular when the floral scent experience is the main focus. Both oils are pure and 100% natural, so you can use them mindfully in your aromatherapy session.
