Patchouli oil

Patchouli oil

Patchouli oil has a deep, warm and earthy scent that instantly adds character to a room, fragrance blend or skincare routine. Our pure patchouli essential oil is extracted via steam distillation from Pogostemon cablin from Indonesia. Choose your preferred size – 10, 30, 50 or 100 ml – and use the oil responsibly, always following the instructions on the label.

The scent of patchouli

The scent of patchouli is intense, spicy, woody and slightly sweet. Some people recognise in it the distinctive scent of incense, vintage perfumes or the 1960s and 1970s. Yet patchouli is much more than just an old-fashioned scent: thanks to its rich, dark character, it remains a favourite as a base note in natural perfumes and aromatic compositions.

Patchouli blends beautifully with fresh citrus scents, floral oils and warm woody notes. Discover also the Woody fragrance profile. Examples include bergamot, orange, lavender, rose, ylang-ylang and cedarwood. Start with just a few drops, as patchouli has a very strong presence and can quickly dominate a blend.

What do you use patchouli essential oil for?

Patchouli oil is mainly chosen for its scent, to enjoy moments of relaxation and for creative uses involving natural aromas. Its rich fragrance can help to create a calm, enveloping atmosphere when you want to slow down, meditate or consciously take some time for yourself.

  • In a diffuser: for a warm, earthy scent in your home, perhaps combined with a lighter oil. Read more: How many drops should you put in your diffuser?.
  • In massage oil: only when diluted in a suitable carrier oil for a personal care routine.
  • In the bath or foot bath: First mix the essential oil thoroughly with a suitable neutral bath product or another suitable carrier. Do not add essential oil to water undiluted.
  • In a natural fragrance creation: Patchouli gives perfume or fragrance blends a deep base note and a long-lasting character.

Origin and extraction

Patchouli is an aromatic plant native to tropical Asia. The essential oil is extracted from the plant’s leaves by steam distillation. Our patchouli oil comes from Indonesia and has the botanical name Pogostemon cablin.

The oil itself is concentrated. As a result, you usually only need a small amount to experience the characteristic patchouli scent. Keep the bottle tightly closed, in a cool place and out of the reach of children, to ensure the oil retains its quality as much as possible. Also, take a look at our Single essential oils (O–Z).

Using patchouli oil safely

Essential oils are potent and must be used with care. Do not apply patchouli oil undiluted to the skin; always dilute it first in a suitable carrier oil. Take a look at our Base oils for dilution. When using for the first time, test a diluted mixture on a small patch of skin and stop using if irritation occurs.

Patchouli oil is intended for external use only and must not be ingested. Are you pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication, or do you wish to use the oil on young children? If so, please seek advice from an expert first. Read more about Safe use of essential oils and always follow the safety instructions on the product label.
