Geranium oil is made from the fragrant green parts of the plant, not just the flowers. The aroma is fresh, sweet and floral, with a distinct rose-like quality. This makes it a lovely oil to use when you want to create a softer, warmer and more balanced atmosphere in your home. See also Floral fragrance profiles if you like this fragrance profile.
In fragrance blends, geranium acts as a lovely, unifying heart note. The oil blends well with lavender, bergamot, orange, frankincense, ylang-ylang and rose, amongst others. This makes it easy to create a personalised fragrance that’s perfect for a moment of tranquillity, meditation or an evening ritual.
Essential oils are highly concentrated. You should therefore always use them sparingly and adjust the amount according to the room, the product and your sensitivity.
Add a few drops of geranium oil to the water reservoir of your diffuser, following the instructions for the device. For a fragrance stone, you can start with 2 to 4 drops. The rose-like scent is particularly pleasant in the living room, bedroom or practice room. Read more about How many drops should I put in the diffuser?
Never apply geranium essential oil undiluted to the skin. For example, mix 1 to 2 drops with 10 ml of a vegetable carrier oil to make a nourishing body or massage oil. It is best to make small batches so that you are always using a fresh mixture. Not sure which carrier oil to use? Read more about Choosing a base oil for dilution.
Before using this product on your skin, it is advisable to carry out a patch test in the crook of your elbow. Stop using it if your skin becomes red, itchy or irritated.
Do not add essential oil directly to bath water, as oil does not dissolve in water and may come into direct contact with the skin. First, carefully mix a few drops of geranium oil, at most, into a neutral bath oil or a suitable emulsifier. If using in the shower, you may wish to place a drop on a fragrance stone so that you can enjoy the aroma without direct skin contact. Read more about Using essential oils in the bath.
