The scent and experience of sandalwood

The scent of sandalwood is rounded, balsamic and slightly sweet, with a deep woody note. When used in a diffuser or oil burner, it creates a calm, warm atmosphere in a room. Many people choose sandalwood when they want to consciously create a moment for themselves, for example during yoga, meditation or an evening ritual. Discover the theme too inner peace & meditation.

Sandalwood blends beautifully with, amongst others, frankincense, myrrh, benzoin, cedarwood, rose, jasmine and lavender. Thanks to its rich base note, the scent helps to give a blend greater depth and a longer-lasting character. For inspiration on blending, take a look at fragrance combinations with essential oils.

Using sandalwood essential oil

Always use essential oils with care and in accordance with the product label. Sandalwood oil is particularly suitable for creating a personalised fragrance experience.

  • In a diffuser: Add a few drops to water to create a warm, soothing scent in your home or practice. How many drops should I put in the diffuser?
  • In a fragrance blend: Combine with floral, resinous or other woody oils to create a rich, balanced blend.
  • For external use only: Always dilute essential oil first in a suitable carrier oil or another product intended for this purpose. See base oils for dilution.

Using sandalwood oil safely

Essential oils are highly concentrated. Do not apply sandalwood oil undiluted to the skin and avoid contact with the eyes and mucous membranes. If you are sensitive to fragrances, test a diluted product on a small patch of skin first.

Keep the oil out of the reach of children. Are you taking any medication, or are you pregnant or breastfeeding? If in doubt, seek advice from an expert before applying essential oil to the skin. Sandalwood oil is not intended for internal use. Read more about safe use of essential oils.

Frequently asked questions about sandalwood oil

What are the spiritual properties of sandalwood?

Sandalwood has long been prized for its calming, soothing scent. As part of a personal ritual, meditation or yoga session, the warm, woody scent can help you consciously focus on tranquillity, mindfulness and relaxation.

Is sandalwood the same as cedar wood?

No. They are different types of wood, each with its own scent profile. Sandalwood generally has a softer, warmer and creamier scent, whilst cedarwood often comes across as drier, fresher and more pencil-like and woody. Together, they do form a lovely, earthy scent combination.

Why is sandalwood oil often expensive?

Sandalwood is a popular raw material in perfumery and aromatherapy. The availability, origin and processing of the oil can all affect the price. Sandalwood West is a more affordable alternative for those who wish to enjoy a similar warm, woody fragrance.
